Disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI), formerly known as functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), are common conditions in both clinical practice and community settings.
These functional disorders are defined as “a cluster of chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities, significantly interfering with the quality of life of the child and their family”.
Their etiology is multifactorial, and several pathogenetic axes have been identified, including gut–brain signaling interactions, genetic predisposition, alterations in intestinal microbiota, impaired intestinal barrier function, as well as environmental factors.
