Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is defined as the predisposition of the airways to constrict excessively in response to environmental stimuli that normally have a reduced or absent effect in healthy individuals.
As a clinical phenomenon, bronchial hyperresponsiveness was first noted and introduced as a subject of interest in understanding and treating bronchial disorders; abnormal airway responses to nonspecific stimuli were first documented by R. Tiffeneau and M. Beauvallet in 1945 and were further developed in the 1960s. Later, nearly forty years ago now, D.W. Cockcroft and colleagues developed and popularized the nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness test.
