Metabolic dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) is currently the most common chronic liver disease worldwide and one of the main consequences of the global epidemic of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. The continuing rise in the prevalence of these conditions has turned MASLD into a major public health problem, with significant clinical, economic, and social implications.
MASLD affects a substantial proportion of the adult population, with prevalence considerably higher among people with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other components of metabolic dysfunction. In addition, the disease is being diagnosed increasingly often in children and adolescents, reflecting lifestyle changes and the rising prevalence of excess weight from the earliest decades of life.
