Metabolic syndrome is one of the most important challenges of contemporary medicine, both because of its continuously rising prevalence and its major impact on morbidity, mortality, and health system costs.
Characterized by the co-occurrence of several metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities — abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, arterial hypertension, and atherogenic dyslipidemia — metabolic syndrome is the clinical expression of systemic metabolic dysfunction and a major determinant of the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.
The rising prevalence of obesity, lifestyle changes, accelerated urbanization, and population aging have promoted the spread of metabolic syndrome worldwide, turning it into a genuine public health problem.
It is currently estimated that approximately one quarter of the adult population meets the diagnostic criteria for this condition, with prevalence increasing progressively with age and being significantly higher among people with excess weight, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.
